True dating confession: My boyfriend gave me up for Lent
My dolls, we've heard some pretty eye popping dating confessions, from, "I found out my husband was gay," to, "My ex made me pay more for toilet paper."
Well, today, one reader has another scorcher: Her boyfriend gave her up for Lent! Hear her tale after the jump....
Here's our reader's story....
My boyfriend and I had been dating for six months. We're both Catholic, so we decided to give something up for Lent. I was giving up alcohol and asked what he was giving up. He said, 'Um, well...you.' I was taken aback, but he explained that he wanted to give up all physical interaction with me. I tried to reason with him and explained that physical intimacy is an important part of a relationship, but he said this would give us a chance to see if there was more to the relationship than the attraction.
Good idea in theory, maybe? But not in practice. I agreed to give it a try, but after two weeks, it was too tough. I started questioning if he was attracted to me (and if he was really straight?). One conversation led to another...and we ended up breaking up two weeks into Lent.
At the time, it was tough to handle. Looking back, I'm thankful it happened. Otherwise, who knows how long it would have taken me to figure out that something wasn't right between us? Plus, it makes a good story, and whenever a friend is bummed about something her boyfriend did, I just say, 'at least he didn't give you up for Lent!'"
