LESBIAN KISS SHOCKER! (What's the big deal with same-sex PDA anyway?)

Argh, probably because I was so focused on Hillary Clinton and dudes who want to cheat on their pregnant wives, I totally forgot to ask you guys what you thought about the lesbian women who got in trubs at a Seattle Mariners game for kissing!?

Just to refresh your memory, the AP reported that:

"As the Mariners played the Boston Red Sox on May 26, Sirbrina Guerrero and her date were approached in the third inning by an usher who told them their kissing was inappropriate, Guerrero said.

The usher, Guerrero said, told them he had received a complaint from a woman nearby who said that there were kids in the crowd of nearly 36,000 and that parents would have to explain why two women were kissing.

'I was really just shocked,' Guerrero said. 'Seattle is so gay-friendly. There was a couple like seven rows ahead making out. We were just showing affection."

Now I don't mean to cry over spilled milk, but I think gay civil rights is an important issue (duh), and I guess I just can't get over the fact that this could even happen in 2008! However, turns out, there's some he said/she said at play. While the blogosphere blew up last week about how the couple experienced discrimination due to their sexual orientation, Mariners spokespeople (who issued an apology to Guerrero), claim that the women were acting inappropriately, period, and their demerit had nothing to do with the fact that they were a same-sex couple. Still, I've been to enough ball games to know that drunk couples make out all the time and even though people smirk, I've never seen anyone called out for it. (In fact, I've always suspected it was a trashy ploy to make it on the big screen!?) Was there a double standard at play?

I guess regardless of who's at fault here, what really irks me is that parents would complain that two women kissing entails that they would be forced to explain to their children what gay means. Seriously, this is a problem? Are you keeping the tykes in a bomb shelter? I'm not suggesting that any parent prematurely give their kids the old birds and the bees talk, but surely a, "People kiss because they love each other," isn't too graphic.

What do you think?
