Venus, the Author!

By Lucy Danziger, Editor-in-Chief, SELF, author,The Nine Rooms of Happiness

Venus Williams just sent me the nicest letter. She wrote in wonderful handwriting on gray stationary that has just the name Venus at the top, thanking me for contributing to her book on how sports informs the professional world, specifically in the lives of leaders from all fields: Bill Clinton and Condi Rice for politicians; Meg Whitman and Jack Welch in business; Denzel Washington, Robin Roberts and Soledad O'Brien as superstars in the spotlight; myself, Donny Deutsch and Jeff Zucker for media folks. There are dozens more, from Ken Chenault to Vera Wang, and each of us shares our story about how being involved in sports has informed our thinking, our outlook and our approach.

This is the closest thing to a memoir I've ever written-or in this case, told to a writer-and Venus could not have been sweeter in her thank you: "Your vital energy and excitement about life and the magazine and sport are infectious. You really live it," she wrote. Well, I'd say: Right back at ya!-and then some. She goes on to add: "From crew to skiing to triathlons, there is nothing that a girl can't do." She's right. After all, this Olympic gold medalist, Wimbledon and U.S. Open champ, and top-ranked singles player just proved she can write a sure-to-be-best-selling book (it will be in stores next week).

Way to go, Venus! Thanks for including me. I feel honored to be part of such an intelligent and well-crafted book. Inspiring? Yes. Sometimes just being asked to the prom is enough to make you feel like a queen.
