Singer/Songwriter Sara Barellies shot to stardom when her single, Love Song, became a mainstream staple. It's been two years since Love Song was released and now she has released her sophomore album, Kaleidoscope Heart. It's a must-listen for anyone who is heartbroken and on the road to bouncing back.
The album isn't a large jump from her debut - you can still expect the same feel, from the way she carries her voice to the way she generates lyrics that almost anyone can relate to, as many of them focus on relationships. The first track, Kaleidoscope Heart, is a one minute introduction to the album sung in acapella that showcases Barellies' amazing harmonic abilities.
Sara Barellies seems to have hard her fair share of heartbreak and portrays it brilliantly on this album. Her first single, King Of Anything is reminiscent of Love Song in the way she rebels against some mystery man. The lines "Who cares if you disagree? You are not me. Who made you king of anything? So you dare tell me who to be? Who died and made you king of anything?" speak for themselves.
Other tracks on the album include Uncharted, which was actually the first song recorded for the album. Uncharted is a piano-driven pop ballad about messing up and moving on. "No broken heart, No familiar scars, This territory goes uncharted..." Compared to her previous album, this one is filled with reminders of heartache such as in Say you're sorry with the chorus "But I want you to say you are sorry / I'm not the one who went and made a mistake" and Gonna Get Over You features "Ooh, how'm I gonna get over you? I'll be alright, just not tonight / Someday, oh I wish you'd want me to stay / I'll be alright, just not tonight, Someday." Gonna Get Over You is a track that highlights a feeling that many people have felt after a relationship breakup.
Kaleidoscope Heart isn't entirely Barellies' ode to heartache. It does have its own share of songs that are more uplifting. Machine Gun is a track about trying to get through someone's defenses just so you can love them.
It's hard to upstage her debut album with her previous hits like Gravity and Love Song, but Kaleidoscope Heart does come close. Barellies' vocals can't be denied and it's a refreshing take on music that can be overshadowed in the world of Lady GaGa and Justin Bieber. If you want a soulful blend of pop with meaningful lyrics, definitely check out this new album as you are on your way to bouncing back.
