Tag along with Siena Filippi as she curates a ‘dark academia’ thrift haul
Thrift stores can be hard to navigate, but with the right tips, you can find a complete outfit for an incredible bargain. In this episode of ITK: Thrift Talk, host and second-hand shopping expert Siena Filippi (@simply.siena) takes us along on a trip to NYC thrift store The Thrifty Hog with the mission of finding the brooding, scholarly “dark academia” outfit of her dreams.
Siena describes the “dark academia” look as a romanticization of librarian style, focusing on plaid skirts, collared shirts and tailored trousers. She recommends The Thrifty Hog because it is highly curated, making it easier to find good pieces. Plus, the vintage store donates its profits to women and children in need. “Zero buyer’s remorse here!” Siena adds.

The first step is pulling out pieces with collars, pleats or structured fits. Siena starts in the women’s section but notes that she will make it over to the men’s section.
“I have two things I focus on when I’m making an outfit,” Siena says. “I either do a larger top and a smaller bottom, or a large bottom and little top.”
Another tip: Look up. Siena says that shoppers rarely look at the top shelves in vintage shops, which is often where she finds her best pieces.

After finding a few basic button-down shirts with good structure, Siena is ready for some patterned pieces to make the outfit more interesting. So, she heads to the men’s section to look at accessories like ties and bags.
Once she has a sufficient amount of thrifted finds — two white button-downs, a plaid skirt, a patterned corset top, a sweater and some accessories — Siena is ready to hit the dressing room. She takes the time to put together multiple outfits before settling on the one that best epitomizes “dark academia”: the corset layered over an oversized, pleated button-down and paired with a black skirt. She accessorizes the look with a tie and leather handbag.
