Taco Bell Puts Cheese on the Outside of Its Grilled Cheese Burrito

Taco Bell has always been a brand that believes in living mas. Over the course of the years, that’s translated to a wide variety of outside-the-bun product launches, and 2019 has been no exception. Now, it would seem that they’re even thinking outside the burrito when it comes to Mexican fast food innovation.

That’s because Taco Bell is testing out what they’re calling a Grilled Cheese Burrito. If you’re picturing your classic grilled cheese with the elements of a burrito stuffed inside, you’re on the wrong track. Instead, this thing is a grilled burrito that is stuffed with cheese both inside and— more importantly— out. Really: Taco Bell takes a bunch of cheese and melts it around the outside of the tortilla, creating a beautiful golden layer of gooey cheese that erupts into a taste explosion before you even get through that outer layer and into the good stuff (beef, rice, chipotle sauce, sour cream, tortilla chip strips) hiding within.

While this represents the first time Taco Bell has transcended our spatial understanding of a burrito, it’s not their only recent offering to elevate cheese as a central culinary element. Their Cheddar Crisps are essentially a chip made entirely out of cheese, and they’ve even introduced “Zesty Ranch” flavored shredded cheese that you can buy in the dairy section of your grocery store.

But they have nothing on the Grilled Cheese Burrito. It’s like Taco Bell’s answer to the Stuffed Crust Pizza, but completely the opposite. And if you find yourself at a famed combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, well, you’re privy to an unrivaled culinary experience when it comes to eating cheese that’s been put in places it doesn’t normally belong.

As is often the case with these product teases, the Grilled Cheese Burrito isn’t yet available at your neighborhood Taco Bell unless your neighborhood happens to be Chattanooga, Tennessee. But if you’re passing through, you’ll find it available fro $2.99, as well as part of a $5 or a $7 box loaded with extras.

Has Taco Bell gone too far? Have they run out of places to put cheese? The only thing we know for sure is that this thing is probably unlike any burrito you’ve ever encountered.
