Taco Bell Has a New Menu Item, and It Isn’t Remotely Close to a Taco

Unexpected? Yes. Tempting? Also yes.

Chicken nugget lovers, listen up. While you may typically find yourself heading to fast-food chains such as Burger King or McDonald’s for a chicken nugget meal, an unexpected competitor has entered the arena.

While we know (and love) Taco Bell for its Mexican-inspired menu full of burritos, tacos, Crunchwraps, and more, the chain is getting into the chicken nugget game. At a media event at Taco Bell’s headquarters earlier this month, a representative for the chain reportedly said, “This is like truly a very premium nugget. It's not a chicken nugget patty you might get at some fast-food restaurants. This is very much more elevated.”

Taco Bell’s New Crispy Chicken Nuggets

Crispy Chicken Nuggets have officially been spotted on Taco Bell’s menu. The nuggets feature all-white-meat chicken marinated in a jalapeño-buttermilk mixture. The nuggets are accompanied by two new dipping sauces: Bell Sauce (made with tomatoes, red chiles, garlic, and onions for a slightly spicy kick) and Jalapeño Honey Mustard (a sweet and tangy take on honey mustard with a bit of bite, thanks to the jalapeño flavor).

The nuggets range in price based on location. A five-piece nugget box with one sauce will cost between $3.99 and $4.99, and a 10-piece nugget box including two sauces will cost between $6 and $8.99.

The only thing standing between you and the nuggets? Location. The nuggets are debuting at 83 Minneapolis Taco Bell locations as a test item.

This isn't Taco Bell’s only foray into nuggets. In 2017, the chain released triangle-shaped nuggets called Naked Chicken Chips served with nacho cheese. And in August, the chain announced a limited-availability item Chile Crisp Chicken Strips. At that time, the brand noted that it was continuing to expand its chicken offerings.

Taco Bell Also Added a New Burrito to Menus Nationwide

If you’re not convinced that chicken nuggets are necessary at Taco Bell, there’s something else that still might interest you. Taco Bell recently launched the Steak and Bacon Grilled Cheese Burrito nationwide following a successful test run in a few Ohio locations this past spring.

The burrito contains grilled steak, potatoes, a three-cheese blend, nacho cheese sauce, chipotle sauce, and sour cream wrapped in a warm flour tortilla. But where’s the bacon, you ask? It’s grilled on top, along with more of the three-cheese blend.

Though the burrito has been released nationwide, you’ll have to act fast—it’s only available for a limited time.
