Taco Bell Just Quietly Added a 1990s-Favorite Menu Item Back to the Lineup

“The insane amount of love for this product from fans across our social platforms was impossible to ignore,” the brand’s chief marketing officer says.

Tacos. Burrito. Crunchwraps. Nachos—and now nacho fries. Oh, and let’s not forget the cinnamon twists. If you regularly ring the dinner bell at Taco Bell, then you know these menu items, as well as your favorite customizations for each, by heart.

You probably have a mental obituary list of menu items gone but not forgotten. RIP, Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos. We miss you, Meximelt. You made life sweeter, Caramel Apple Empanada.

Unlike the way the McRib keeps “retiring” only to return again the next year, when Taco Bell recipes are sunset, they usually depart from the menu for good.

All that changed in October 2022, when the Tex-Mex chain allowed fans to vote online over the course of 10 days to determine which dish would be voted back on the island. After tabulating the more than 760,000 votes, the Enchirto edged out the Double Decker Taco in a 62 to 38 percent rout.

For the uninitiated, the Enchirito is a main dish of beef, beans, and onions wrapped in a flour tortilla, then smothered in red sauce and melted cheddar cheese. It was last on the menu in 2013, then made its triumphant comeback for 14 days last year.

The Double Decker Taco Is Back at Taco Bell

Fans of the Double Decker Taco refused to go quietly into the night, though. The two-layer treat—a beef, lettuce, and cheese hard corn taco tucked inside a bean-schmeared flour tortilla—is set to have a second life on the menu after fans raised their voices online.

The Double Decker originally debuted as a limited-time offer in 1995. In June 2006, it was welcomed into the Bell family as a permanent menu item. Its long run ended in 2019. After coming in second to the Enchirito in the fall 2022 poll, fans took to Reddit to alert Montgomery and the Taco Bell team that they desired more Double Decker action.

In May, Taco Bell hosted an “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) Q&A on Reddit. Taylor Montgomery, chief marketing officer for the Irvine, California-based fast food chain, fielded dozens of questions, including one from a Reddit user named u/IMissTheDoubleDecker.

After explaining that it was their go-to fast food order, the Redditor vividly recalled “the day the Double Decker died. It was a soul-crushing event, which stopped me dead in my tracks. How could this happen?”

Other fans took to Instagram when @TacoBell started dropping hints about retired menu items in its Spotify Wrapped-like year summary, admitting,“I will legit have my wedding at any Taco Bell location if you bring back the double decker taco,” and “Dear Taco Bell Santa, All I want for Christmas is a DOUBLE DECKER TACO! 🌮 From your #1 NICE LIST Taco Bell fan! 😂🤤😉”

Ask and you shall receive, Taco Bell executives seem to be saying: “The Double Decker Taco holds a deep space in the hearts of our Taco Bell Fans. The insane amount of love for this product from fans across our social platforms was impossible to ignore,” Montgomery explained in a press release. “The sentiment was particularly strong following last year’s spirited face-off with the Enchirito. We listened to what our fans wanted from us and knew we couldn’t deny them the joy of the Double Decker Taco any longer.”

As of December 5, the Double Decker Taco ($2.99) and the Double Decker Supreme with diced tomatoes and reduced-fat sour cream ($3.69) are officially back on the menu. For all of us who share some of u/IMissTheDoubleDecker’s sentiments, this is a holiday wish come true. That being said, don’t sleep on your opportunity. Taco Bell’s social media team just announced that the Double Deckers are available at participating U.S. locations only until December 20.
