Between fast food chains including McDonald’s, KFC, and Popeyes, the chicken sandwich war has really been heating up. Another player is ready to step into the game, so soon enough you’ll be able to get fried chicken at Taco Bell.

In 2019, Taco Bell tested out fried chicken at select locations, in two dishes. The options were ordering the Crispy Tortilla Chicken (made with a crunchy tortilla chips and panko bread crumbs coating) in a box of tenders served with a new signature dipping sauce or in a soft taco with lettuce, cheese, and diced tomatoes. But neither of those dishes are what we can expect in 2021, according to an interview Insider did with Taco Bell’s global chief food innovation officer, Liz Matthews.

“I love watching the competitors. I think a lot of players out there are doing a great job, but what I will say is that we will interrupt that with what we’re going to do on chicken,” Matthews said.

Menu innovations slowed down a bit due to COVID, Matthews said, but the pipeline never stopped. While we don’t know what the mystery chicken item is yet, it’s apparently part of a wider range of new and returning items happening in 2021.

“I think what you’re going to see over the next 24 months is all of that work will come to light,” Matthews said.

Taco Bell already kicked off the year by bringing potatoes back to the menu, which means we can once again enjoy Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes and Spicy Potato Soft Tacos. We’re off to a delicious start.
