Taco Bell Is Bringing Back an Iconic Menu Item for a Limited Time

Dreams do come true.

Earlier this year, Taylor Montgomery, the chief marketing officer at Taco Bell, did an “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) question-and-answer session on Reddit. He replied to dozens of questions, including one from a Redditor named u/IMissTheDoubleDecker that straight-up begged Montgomery to restore — you guessed it — the Double Decker Taco to its menu.

“For years [...] the Double Decker would continue to be my go-to for fast food in general,” the Redditor wrote. “Then it happened. September 12, 2019, I will never forget where I was. The day the Double Decker died. It was a soul-crushing event, which stopped me dead in my tracks. How could this happen?” That still-committed Taco Bell regular signed off by asking Mongtomery “to listen to my words and convince those who need to hear them.”

Wherever u/IMissTheDoubleDecker is today, and whatever he or she is doing, I hope they know that some wishes do come true … at least for a limited time. Taco Bell has announced that it is bringing the Double Decker Taco for the duration of the holiday season.

If you’ve never had a Double Decker Taco, first … why not??? And next, it’s a hard taco shell filled with seasoned beef, shredded lettuce, and cheddar cheese that is being gently cradled by a bean-filled soft tortilla. Each Double Decker can also be upgraded to a Supreme version, by adding diced tomatoes and reduced-fat sour cream. The standard Double Decker has a suggested price of $2.99, while the Double Decker Taco Supreme is $3.69.

“The Double Decker Taco holds a deep space in the hearts of our Taco Bell Fans. The insane amount of love for this product from fans across our social platforms was impossible to ignore,” Montgomery said in a statement. “We listened to what our fans wanted from us and knew we couldn’t deny them the joy of the Double Decker Taco any longer.”

The Double Decker Taco could’ve made its triumphant return to Taco Bell in October 2022, when the Irvine, California-based chain gave fans the chance to vote one item back into existence. Taco Bell Rewards program members were eligible to vote, and they had to choose between the Enchirito and the Double Decker Taco. During the 10-day period when the online poll was open, over 760,000 votes were cast, and the Enchirito emerged as the clear winner. Sixty-two percent of participants voted for the Enchirito, and the Double Decker went back into Taco Bell’s well-seasoned vault.

The Double Decker is currently available at participating restaurants throughout the United States, and Taco Bell has not specified when it will disappear from our lives again. As for when it will disappear from our hearts, that day will never come.
