Tabby Cat Starting Her 'Weight Loss Journey' Is Searching for a Loving Home

There are so many shelter pets across the country who are in search of their forever home, and many of them have not had it easy. Whether they were found living on the streets as a stray or were taken from an abusive owner, it can be tough to think about what many of these sweet shelter animals have gone through. Oftentimes, they are emaciated and skinny, but every now and then, shelter staff meets a cat like Ellie, who's in the opposite situation.

Ellie is a very beautiful but very rotund tabby cat who's looking for an owner to help her along on her weight loss journey. In return, she's sure to offer tons of love and companionship. She is curious and friendly with her human friends at the Michigan Animal Rescue League, though nothing will be better for her than a forever home. Check out her February 10 video!

Oh, Ellie! This shelter kitty seems so sweet and easygoing that she's sure to be adopted soon. Her extra weight will become less of an issue with enough movement, dieting, and love, and she'll become an even healthier version of herself.

This 9-year-old tabby cat was recently surrendered to @mi_animalrescueleague, though the shelter didn't specify what her life may have been like beforehand. It's very likely she had someone who loved her but was unable to stick to a healthy feeding schedule, but it's difficult to know. What they do know is that she lived in a home with another cat, so she has no problem around other felines.

Understanding the Effects of Feline Obesity

Let's be honest: fat cats seem to gain a lot of attention on social media. It's easy to see why: they are quite cute and silly-looking, but the sad reality is that feline obesity can make a cat's life exponentially more difficult.

Teams of veterinarians have even developed a body condition score chart to help owners determine whether their cat is at a healthy weight. The 'chonk chart' uses images of cats' bodies alongside descriptive explanations to categorize felines based on body weight. Some cat breeds naturally weigh more than others, so it's impossible to gauge a kitty's health based on a number on a scale alone.

Fortunately, helping a cat size down on the chonk chart isn't as difficult as one may think. Yes, it may require some changes in a feline's diet and more intentional movement, but a few small routine adjustments can help almost any cat thrive--including Ellie!
