“Ohhh, she’s back.”
What was it that finally released Tiffany’s Bird on a Rock from its gilded cage and into the realm of gems of the year? Was it Odell Beckham Jr. wearing one on his varsity jacket at the Super Bowl? Or Jay-Z in the back of a Rolls-Royce with one on his lapel for the company’s ad campaign? Maybe the world was just ready for the metaphoric possibilities of a jeweled bird flocking away. Optimism! Rebirth! New heights! Jean Schlumberger designed the brooch in the 1960s, one of the first having a lapis center stone and a bird with an emerald eye. The modern classics are amethyst, citrine, and tanzanite. In 2022 the bird also sat on tsavorite and blue cuprian elbaite tourmaline, and now, for the first time ever, a white diamond. Catch that one on your lapel and you call him “Johny.”
