Of all the the life-home-maintenance chores, I prefer laundry the most. I love laundry so much, that I've taken to making a weekly ritual out of it. Friday is when I wash my clothes, Monday is when I wash my towels, linens, and bedding. As you can imagine, I have a whole system for it, which I have developed out of trial and error. I painstakingly make sure that my darks and brights are separated from my whites, and then I do a mid-tone load as well. I have a dedicated delicates cycle that I run every other week, and I wash my small wool and cashmere items like hats and socks myself with specific detergents for each, and I take care to hang dry my items that need it. You might say neurotic, but I say thorough. I like knowing that I am taking care of my beloved things the way that I want them to be cared for. And for the window of time that The Laundress was reformulating in late 2022 and 2023, there was a real hole in my routine.
I simply was not able to find a substitute for their luxe, lightly scented but very effective detergent. So when they relaunched last year, you better believe that I was first in line to stock up on the Signature detergent. They have since re-launched specific formulations for darks and whites, but for the better part of a year, the signature detergent has been all I have used, and it's never occurred to me to stray.
There are a number of reasons I like it, but let's start with the scent. It's not in your face, it's not chemical, and it's not overly gendered. It smells fresh, but in a soft delicate way that is unobtrusive. I would say it offers a hint of comfort, but doesn't scream at you, which for someone like me who is sensitive, is really crucial.
I also love the consistency and concentration. It's easy to dose out around 30ml with the silicone laundry cup (I own multiple, because I tend to forget them in the laundry room and people steal them... which is rude, but I also get why). And with every load, I find that it's really effective at getting grime and staining out, even if I haven't pre-treated. Every bottle has also lasted me at least a few months at a time, in spite of doing a high volume of laundry every week, and more recently working in specialized detergents as I mentioned above.
All in all, I'm so glad the Laundress is back to make my laundry day feel a bit more elevated. Having a luxe laundry detergent makes even the most mundane of tasks feel a little more glam—and this is my way of choice going forward.
