Six the Musical made history this past weekend when Toby Marlow became the first openly non-binary person to win a Tony Award, taking home the trophy for Best Original Score along with co-creator Lucy Moss. In an exclusive video premiering today on T&C, the cast of the Broadway hit, which reimagines Henry VIII's wives as a pop group, sits down with Marlow and Moss at the Skylark hotel, to discuss the show's success.

The conversation, which can be viewed above, features the Six team asking each other questions about everything from the musical's unique early-stage rehearsal process, which saw the actors giving presentations on the real-life women they represent on stage, to the modern authenticity of this story.

Samantha Pauly, who plays Katherine Howard, opens up in the clip, sharing that she was initially nervous to hear herself sing “All You Wanna Do” on the Six live album, as the nature of the musical's sound is raw. But she later describes her “gratitude” for the fans’ reaction to the song, and its recent Broadway.com Audience Choice Award win.

Notably, Mallory Maedke, who is an alternate and expected to go on in any role at a moment’s notice—like she did Sunday night at the Tony Awards, filling in for Abby Mueller—was also part of the conversation, emphasizing the importance of understudies on Broadway right now, especially given the ongoing pandemic. She says that she’s grown tremendously from playing multiple queens on the show. “You guys, the creatives, have given us support as alternatives to be ourselves even while playing these characters,” Maedke tells Marlow and Moss.

Many of the discussion's questions also focused in on the passionate community of fans who have come to love this show.

Andrea Macasaet, who plays Anne Boleyn, says that she has cherished becoming a role model for Six’s younger audience. Like most sectors of show business, Broadway lacked diversity in casting for much of its history, and Macasaet shares that it’s an honor to be the representation she wished she had as a child. “It’s cool being the somebody that I needed when I was younger,” she says. Joy Woods, who plays Catherine Parr, also notes how diversity in the company and cast reflects a positive change on Broadway, saying: “All the roles that we wish we’d seen growing up are in every single queen.”
