The Expendables star Sylvester Stallone has teased the future of the franchise.

Over on Instagram, the Hollywood legend posted a series of images from an upcoming graphic novel, which expands on the action movies' universe.

Starring Stallone alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews as a band of elite mercenaries, the movie franchise was a box office hit, with three movies landing in cinemas in 2010, 2012 and 2014 respectively.

In his social media post, the actor wrote: "Images from the next Adventures of the EXPENDABLES - GO TO HELL!! … Thank you Chuck Dixon and your amazing team for working on this. Go out and get the graphic comic which is going to drop soon."

Five stills from the piece are teased, which sees the likes of Stallone's Barney Ross and Lundgren's Gunnar Jensen doing what they do best in some sort of fantasy realm.

As you can see, the characters must trek across a volcanic landscape while attempting to destroy enemies riding a weaponized elephant.

The graphic novel looks deeply inspired by Peter Jackson's cinematic work, as there's also a gigantic sharp-toothed worm (hello, King Kong) to contend with.

Could this spark inspiration for another movie installment?
