Sydney Sweeney isn’t too bothered about Madame Web’s disastrous reception.

The actress, who plays Spider-Woman Sony’s superhero flop, said it’s got nothing to do with her.

"I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen," Sweeney told the Los Angeles Times.

Sweeney’s wisely distancing herself from what’s turned out to be an embarrassing critical and commercial mess. Earlier in the month she appeared on Saturday Night Live and joked in her monologue, "You definitely did not see me in Madame Web."

Also, Dakota Johnson still hasn’t seen Madame Web.

Madame Web released 14 February, 2024, and has grossed a worldwide total of $97 million. Given it had a reported budget of $80 million, the film wasn’t a loss. It actually made money for Sony.

Saying that, it might have irreparably damaged its stars’ reputations. That explains why Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson have been subtly giving it a kicking (while meticulously juggling their contractual promotional obligations).

With an awful Rotten Tomatoes score of 12%, the only hope is that audiences remember Madame Web as so incredibly awful it’s actually endearing.
