Last summer, everyone looked back when it came time to stock up on swimwear. We saw the resurgence of throwback styles like the ’80s super high cut bottom and logo bathing suits from the ’90s. Kim Kardashian West and Bella Hadid skipped out on the newest pieces in favor of old Dior and Chanel, some of which they’ve been spotted in again while on holiday the last few months. It seems that fashion nostalgia isn’t only an obsession reserved for runway clothing and now, two brands have teamed up to celebrate this kind of retro-inspired swimwear. Solid & Striped and vintage denim label Re/Done have created a special collection of “kits” inspired by three L.A. neighborhoods: Hollywood, Venice, and Malibu. Each kit includes a bikini, a one-piece, denim shorts, and a jacket or hoodie. The designs, which are available online today at Solid & Striped and Re/Done, reflect the look of a ’70s, ’80s and ’90s L.A., with a tie-dye print, underwire bra tops, high-cut bottoms, and wetsuit-inspired two-pieces.

They began with the idea of women in L.A. pairing their swimsuit with their denim cut-off shorts, a fashion trick that is as popular today as it was back in the supermodel heydays. “Cindy Crawford was a starting point for us with this collaboration,” says Solid & Striped founder Isaac Ross. “She also happens to be a Malibu local and recently collaborated with Re/Done on a denim collection. As a part of that campaign, she was photographed on the beach in a Solid & Striped suit and Re/Done jeans. That pairing felt so natural and like the perfect point of reference for this collaboration.” Ross describes the collection as “romantic, playful, and nostalgic,” and says that they are not chasing trends but rather, bringing back a few timeless summer looks. “We also looked at swim campaigns from the ’60s and ’70s,” explains Re/Done’s co-founder Sean Barron. “We looked at images of iconic Bond girls and photographs by Slim Aarons, as well as classic surf films like Big Wednesday.” Whatever the decade, Barron really believes that “heritage-inspired fashion is important right now.” Ross adds, “We wanted to represent the old world glamour of Hollywood, the sporty beach culture and attitude of Malibu, and the playful nostalgia of Venice. We look to the past for inspiration, and so does our customer.”
