A “Sweet Valley High” movie is coming, and the woman behind “Legally Blonde” is writing it

Sweet Valley High is the book-series-turned-quintessential-’90s-show that made everyone wish they had an identical twin. Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are forever in our hearts and minds, but soon they’ll be on the big screen, too, in the Sweet Valley High movie adaptation — and yes, it’s really happening.

We’re still not sure if the OG Sweet Valley High twins, played by Brittany and Cynthia Daniel, will be in the movie, but we do know that the writers behind this sweet big-screen reboot are perfect for the job. Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, writer of Legally Blonde, and Harper Dill, who writes on Fox’s The Mick, have signed with Paramount Pictures to collaborate on the film.

This is going to be unbelievably good! But we have one important question: Will the boys have the ’90s center part?

There’s no word on how Francine Pascal, author of the 600-plus Sweet Valley High books, will be involved in the movie (if at all). But considering that Dill’s The Mick, which stars Kaitlin Olson of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is a hilarious sitcom, and Smith not only wrote Legally Blonde but also one of the most perfect high school films ever, 10 Things I Hate About You, it seems safe to say that Elizabeth and Jessica’s fate is in very good hands.

We’re optimistic that the girl-power sisterhood tone of the original books and show will carry on to the movie adaptation.

As for the original SV TV twins? They can be found on Instagram — at age 41 (!!) — looking exactly the same as they did in the ’90s.

And yes, those two ladies are still making everyone desperately wish they lived in California.

Aside from the writers, very little is known about the Sweet Valley High movie. One thing is for sure, though: it must include that iconic theme song.

We can’t wait for this movie to come out. Long live the ’90s!
