  • Sweet Tooth feels like a modern fairy tale—and what's a fairy tale without an all-knowing narrator?

  • The narrator of Sweet Tooth has a perfect voice for the story.

  • And that narrator's voice has been heard throughout film and television for more than 50 years.

Sweet Tooth has all the makings of an epic, modern-day, fairy tale: heroes, villains, twists, turns, and a heart-warming story of humanity at its center. But perhaps the piece of the puzzle that ties Sweet Tooth together most is the epic, gravelly-voiced narration that opens and closes every episode. If you thought that voice set the right mood every single time, well, you're onto something, because the narrator is James Brolin, an award-winning actor and filmmaker who's been part of the film and television industry for more than 50 years.

The narration helps really move Sweet Tooth from feeling like just a fantasy adventure story to something more; having a Sam Elliott/Big Lebowski style of omniscient narrator really helps to let the viewer feel like you're seeing something. And just like in Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth comic, the narration—particularly the line "This is a story..."—helps feel a sense of safety. A feeling that while we're seeing some stressful, tenuous stuff, in the end it's all going to work out. Things are going to be OK.

And getting the right voice to hammer home that reassurance is vital. If you don't get that just right, well, that mood won't click. But luckily Netflix, and Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle, 100% nailed it with the choice to narrate this new epic tale.

That narrator you hear in every episode of Sweet Tooth is, in fact, James Brolin. Brolin made his TV debut in 1961 and film debut in 1963, and has been steadily working for all the time since. He's made a major mark in both film—with roles in movies like the original Amityville Horror, the original Westworld, and Traffic—and in TV, with his most famous roles in 70s medical show Marcus Welby. M.D and recent comedy Life in Pieces. Brolin has won an Emmy and two Golden Globes in his career (and probably could have won way more than that).

In addition to his long and storied career, Brolin also has quite a famous family as well. He's been married to Barbra Streisand, the iconic singer, actress, and filmmaker, since 1998, and you may have heard of his son, Josh, before. Josh Brolin is probably best known these days for his little role as villain Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but he's also been nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Milk, starred in a pair of fantastic Coen Brothers films (No Country for Old Men and Hail, Caesar), played a former U.S. President (in Oliver Stone's W.), and is an action star in his own right (in the Sicario movies and as Ryan Reynolds' deadpan foil, Cable, in Deadpool 2).

As Sweet Tooth continues—it hasn't yet been renewed for Season 2, but fingers crossed—here's hoping that Brolin's stellar, tonally perfect narration continues as part of the package.
