Sweet Senior Cat in Austin Can't Find a Loving Home All Because of His Age

No matter who you are or where you live, there's a shelter pet out there for you. You could be looking for your next hiking partner or your next movie-time cuddle buddy, and your local shelter's volunteers will be able to help you find your perfect match. So, if you're in the Austin, Texas area and are considering adding four more paws to your home--look no further than sweet senior cat Houdini.

This low-energy furry friend is 15 years old and diabetic, and he's yet to meet a potential adopter willing to accept every side of him. Some are scared off by his medical needs, while others are hesitant to adopt senior cats, but now Houdini has been waiting at Austin Pets Alive for far too long.

On February 20, the TikTok account simply called 'Adopt a Pet' shared Houdini's story in the hopes of finding him a fur-ever home. Could it be your home?

Aww! Houdini is a little cutie patootie, and he doesn't mind at all when a shelter friend interrupts his nap. That shows just how easygoing this senior cat is! Despite his older age and his special medical needs, this gentleman isn't grumpy like some older pets can be.

It's so rewarding to see viewers feeling as enchanted with Houdini as I am. Tons of people are commenting simply to boost the video in TikTok's algorithm. Other commenters are sharing stories from their own old cats and diabetic cats in hopes of helping other people see just how wonderful they are.

"Caring for diabetic cats isn’t difficult," said @bellagirlbbd. "I’ve had 2, and giving insulin is easy to learn to do." That's great news!

Cats Can Live Long Lives With Diabetes

Although diabetes can be a scary condition to live with, many cats with diabetes live long and healthy lives! The key difference is that they will require regular medication, which their owner will help administer. You may need to be mindful of a diabetic cat's diet, but they will play, hunt, and interact with you just like any other feline.

And, like the commenter mentioned, administering insulin is easy to learn to do! Veterinarians and shelter volunteers can show potential adopters how to give their cat medication, but it's up to each cat's forever person to keep up with the regimen. Most often, treatment will include injectable insulin and health-related dietary changes, like cutting back on carbs--and lots of love, of course!

Houdini is staying current on his treatments at Austin Pets Alive, but the best thing for this senior shelter cat would be to go to a forever home where he can relax and recharge!
