Buddy Valastro's wife Lisa Valastro has been his rock for years—22 of them, to be exact.

The Cake Dynasty star revealed that his and Lisa's marriage grew stronger after his devastating hand injury in September 2020, in which a bowling pinsetter impaled his hand in several places. The accident temporarily left him with numbness and limited motion in two fingers, making it hard for him to do his life's work of decorating cakes. (Thankfully, he's since made a full recovery.)

"My wife has been amazing," Buddy told PEOPLE in November 2020. "She's been a trooper. We're going on 20 years now, and I think that we kind of checked all the boxes. But after you have an injury like this, and your wife helps dry you out of the shower, that crosses another level." He added, "You get to really know each other, and love each other and be there for one another."

As for Lisa, taking care of Buddy came naturally, but adjusting to his fame took a little bit of time following the early days of their reality stardom.

"When we got married, it was just us. Every night, he'd come home and we'd talk," Lisa said in a joint interview with Buddy. "Now I share him with millions of people. That's the stressful part of it."

Their solution, of course, involves food, because all the best ones do.

"Every night, we have dinner as a family," Buddy said. "We sit down and we talk and we eat. Those meals, that family time, are times we'll never forget."

Buddy married to Elisabetta "Lisa" Belgiovine on Oct. 14, 2001. She took his surname after they tied the knot.

Buddy marked their 22nd anniversary in a sweet Instagram post with a photo from their wedding day (and yes, the cake is in full view), writing, "22 years, yet every day feels like a honeymoon with you, @lisavalastro4. Your beauty, your laughter, and the gentle way you care for our family radiate a love that's boundless. You've brought pure joy to me and our kids throughout these 22 years. How did Buddy Valastro and his wife meet?

Buddy and Lisa met as kids. Lisa's mother (who, incidentally, is also the baker behind Gloria's Amazing Cookies) and father were best friends with one of Buddy's cousins who lived next door to him, so they'd run into each other often as children. When Buddy was 22 and Lisa was 19, their families got together for dinner, and they began dating shortly after that. When they married, Buddy was 24 and Lisa was 21.

Does Buddy Valastro have a new wife?

No, he does not! But he did renew his vows with Lisa in 2011, and for two really understandable reasons (aside from their undying love for one another, obviously).

The first? The timing of their original wedding.

"We got married in October 2001, less than a month away from Sept. 11," Buddy explained to PEOPLE. "And as joyous an occasion as it was, everybody had a piece of their heart ripped out."

The couple also wanted their children to be a part of their "I do" re-do. Buddy had his and Lisa's children (more on them below) help him propose to Lisa for a second time.

"The kids came to make cupcakes that spelled 'marry us,' and when I brought her in, she looked down and saw it and she was so shocked," Buddy recalled, adding, "The kids were on their knees and I was too. My wife deserves it. She’s such a good wife and mother."

She used to be married to cake decorator Remigio "Remy" Gonzalez and took Gonzalez's surname, but they split in 2010 after he was arrested for sexual assault of a minor. In 2012, it was reported that Remy would likely be deported to Mexico.

Who are Lisa and Buddy Valastro's children?

Buddy and Lisa share four children: Daughter Sofia, 20, and sons Bartolo "Buddy" III, 19, Marco, 16, and Carlo, 12.

Valastro's three eldest children often rock aprons and work alongside their parents when they aren't in school. Sofia is a student at the University of Delaware, and his two oldest sons are athletes, playing lacrosse and football.

In 2022, Buddy revealed that his kids would have a more front-and-center role in Cake Dynasty than they did in Cake Boss since they were getting older.
