‘Sweeney Todd’ Fans Bombard the Show's Instagram After Seeing Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster Update

A new duo is set to terrorize Fleet Street in early February, but fans of Sweeney Todd are still undecided by who will be joining the cast.

Back in October, fans of the hit Broadway musical were devastated to learn Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford would take their final bows as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett on January 14, 2024. What's more, theater aficionados were more stunned to see Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster will take over the main leads starting February 9, 2024. Ahead of the twosome stepping foot into the Lunt-Fontanne Theater, the show's Instagram posted a sneak peek clip of Aaron and Sutton all in costume for the Stephen Sondheim-written production.

"Bless my eyes— Fresh supplies," read the succinct caption on December 5. "2.9.24."

Upon seeing the short snippet on social media, fans of the show had some thoughts about what's to come with Aaron and Sutton. Given how the duo each received Tony Awards for their work in theater (Aaron for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Sutton for Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes), many were ecstatic to see their star power come together for Sweeney Todd.

"OH MY GOD YES," one person wrote on Instagram. "Oh thiiiis is gonna be good!" another declared. "AARON IS REPLACING JOSH? Omg I’m dead," a different follower declared.

Despite the excitement from many, others had concerns about Sutton and Aaron taking over for Josh and Annaleigh. Mainly, they stated how much they were going to miss seeing the latter duo on stage together, along with a few notes on if Sutton and Aaron's voices fit the vocal ranges needed to play the characters.

"This is cool but Josh and Annaleigh will be missed 🥰," one person emoted. "No hate but Sweeney Todd isn’t a show for a beautiful sounding tenor opt up from Aaron Tveit," another noted. "I'll pass on this one. Hope people enjoy the show though," a different fan replied.

Although fans have mixed feelings about Aaron and Sutton taking over in February, there's one more update that left everyone happy. Sweeney Todd's social team announced on Instagram on December 7 that Heartstopper star Joe Locke will join the musical one week before Aaron and Sutton join the cast. He'll be taking over for Stranger Things actor Gaten Matarazzoas Tobias Ragg staring January 31, with no clear end date just yet.
