Prince Philip was in the hospital recovering from a prior health condition during the Sussexes’ tell-all with Oprah, prompting some chatter that the interview could/should be postponed. While CBS ultimately went ahead with airing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s conversation with Oprah, Gayle King clarified that they would have delayed it should the worst have happened to Harry’s grandfather.

Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of CBS This Morning (via Us Weekly), Gayle explained, “If something, god forbid, had happened to him, the interview would not have run at this particular time. But the interview was done and was scheduled before he went into the hospital. But a lot of people have raised that point.”

She went on to say, “I think that Harry and Meghan both have been through so much for the past three years and they really have tried to work it out privately. They really have tried to get help, and nothing was working.”

According to royal reporter Katie Nicholl, Prince Philip has largely been shielded from news of Meghan and Harry’s interview. “The family are very keen that he’s not aware of the full extent of the interview,” Nicholl told 9Honey, explaining that it’d be “impossible for him to completely avoid it” but that “efforts were made to protect him from the full force of the fallout.”

Harry, meanwhile, has been in frequent touch with the Queen about the health of his grandfather, who was recently released from the hospital.
