Survival swim instructor emphasizes importance of proper training for water safety

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — As summer approaches and families head to pools and lakes, Gabi Carrasco-Stewart, a dedicated survival swim instructor at Shrimply the Best NWA Survival Swimming, urges parents to remain aware and take proactive steps to ensure their children’s safety in and around water.

Stewart says parents must avoid distractions such as using phones, watching movies, or engaging in any activity that takes their focus away from their children when they are near or in the water.

“A drowning can happen quickly,” she warns. “You want to be able to step in immediately if something does happen.”

For younger children, Stewart advises keeping them within arm’s reach. This allows parents to respond swiftly if an emergency arises, potentially preventing a tragic accident.

“It’s crucial to be close enough to act right away,” Stewart says.

Another important point Stewart makes is the potential danger of using floaties. While they might seem helpful, they can create a false sense of security for children.

“They don’t necessarily understand that the flotation device is what’s keeping them safe,” Stewart explains. “If they take it off, they might think they can still swim and jump in, which can lead to drownings.”

Stewart strongly recommends that parents invest in proper survival swim lessons for their children. These lessons teach kids essential skills to save themselves in case of an emergency, providing a critical safety net until help arrives. “Survival swim lessons are about equipping children with the knowledge and skills they need to survive in the water,” Stewart said.
