Surprising No One, Emily Ratajkowski Would Make a Very Glam Aerobics Instructor

Working out in the ’80s was a bit of a trip. The era was heavy on the cardio; dance classes and aerobics dominated the fitness scene (please do yourself a favor and watch this video from the National Aerobic Championship). Even more distinctive were the workout clothes of that time period; there was loads of bright spandex pieces and fun accessories such as leg warmers and headbands to boot. The kitschy aesthetic was only further advanced in pop culture: Olivia Newton-John committed to the jazzy look in her iconic “Physical” music video, as did Jane Fonda in her popular workout series on VHS.

Thought that was a look of the past? Seems not—Emily Ratajkowski just brought that ’80s-glam take on athleisure into present day. Stepping out in Los Angeles yesterday, at the supermarket no less, the model showed that everyday workout clothes can still be styled in a head-to-toe fashun way. Her take? Leave the sweatbands at home, and pile on the modern accessories instead.

She wore a bright red two-piece spandex suit, comprised of high-waisted bike shorts and a crop top. The pieces look similar to styles found in Ratajkowski’s own swim and body line, Inamorata. Then, she dressed it up with large gold earrings, cat-eye sunglasses, and a semi-sporty Versace tote bag, while Nike Cortez sneakers further played up the retro vibe. Considering Ratajkowski doesn’t count herself “a crazy fitness person,” it makes sense this athletic look is heavier on the style than it is the function. Do you need a full getup the next time you head to the gym, then? Not necessarily—but consider it a strategic move for when you don’t want to wear real clothes.
