This Surprising Cleaning Method Will Leave Your Mattress Feeling Brand New

If I'm being honest, I have to admit I don't really remember what it's like sleeping on a new mattress. Cars have that new car smell, and knives cut through steak like butter on the first use. But new mattresses? It's not a feeling I was familiar with — until I heard about a mattress cleaning technique that apparently everyone already knew about except for me. I never would have thought of it before, but since I tried it, my sleep has never been better.

I first starting looking into ways to clean my mattress when I read a list of household items we should all be cleaning regularly. Most of the things on the list weren't surprising, but the "bedding" section really stopped me in my tracks. I change my sheets every week, but I didn't realize I was supposed to be cleaning my actual mattress! Aside from deodorizing it with baking soda every once in a while, I'd never thought of deep cleaning my mattress as a priority.

Why You Need to Vacuum Your Mattress

The list simply recommended vacuuming my mattress once a month. I couldn't believe I'd never tried that; after all, I vacuum my couch all the time. Turns out running your vacuum on the bed helps get rid of all that invisible dust and dead skin that collect on and inside the top layer of the mattress over time. In fact, the Better Sleep Council says vacuuming is the very best way to clean your mattress.

Once I tried it, I quickly saw why they recommend it. I made sure my vacuum was ready with the upholstery attachment, then ran it over my stripped mattress a few times. I immediately saw the fabric get fluffier, and when I laid down, it did indeed feel a little more comfortable. I decided to go one step further and sprinkled some baking soda on top of my mattress, then vacuumed it all up again about an hour later. After this easy mattress cleaning session, my mattress really did feel brand new!

Never vacuumed your mattress before? Try it, and you'll be shocked you didn't think of it sooner!
