Surfing Full Moon Tidal Wave in Brazil (Video)

Surfing on the Amazon River, as weird as it sounds, is nothing new.

People have been riding the tidal bore, dubbed the "Pororoca," for years now; and yet, any time this natural phenomenon comes to life, it’s worth a watch.

Hence below, when hordes of surfers flocked to the Pororoca during a recent full moon.

Per the Associated Press, who published the video:

“Surfers from across Brazil gathered to surf the ‘Pororoca’ tidal bore at the mouth of the Amazon River in the state of Pára.

“The natural event occurs during a full or new moon when the incoming ocean tide reverses the river flow, creating a wide and long-lasting wave.

“Riding the Pororoca can be very dangerous due to the abundant presence of debris and the mere power of the tide.

“Pororoca in Tupi Guarani dialect means ‘destructor,’ ‘big roar.’

“And it’s exactly what it does.”

According to Noélio Sobrinho, President of the Brazilian Pororoca Surfing Association:

“You have to throw yourself into that vibe and integrate yourself with nature…never to conquer it, because it’s impossible.”

Per some surfers of the wave:

“This is the longest wave in the world. And it’s in Brazil, in the world’s forest. Every surfer has to come and see.”

Pretty neat.
