Huntington Beach is a bit of an enigma in the world of surfing.

From a cultural, historical standpoint, it holds weight. It’s home to the US Open of Surfing; it churns out some of the region’s greatest surfers (Kanoa Igarashi, Brett Simpson, etc.); its been dubbed with the universal moniker, “Surf City, USA.”

And yet, it’s not the best wave in the world, and the crowds are chaotic. Seriously, surfing the pier can be absolute bedlam, as seen below:

The clip comes from Kook of the Day, by way Dans Surf Cave, then Meanwhile in Huntington Beach, an amalgamation account of all things weird in HB.

Captioning the clip, the former wrote:

“Another beautiful weekend in HB!”

While the latter went with:

“I say hey you get off of my cloud.”

It shows, like we’ve seen so many times before, a compilation of dangerous drop-ins, mostly on the north side of the pier in HB. And one, in particular, that’s especially nasty.

That one features someone dropping in, like all the other clips, then the person being dropped in on flings their surfboard at the wave hog, then that guy goes down.

Criminal?

In the comments section, one writer sparked a conversation:

“’I’ve never surfed, but I skate a lot. So, I know what it’s liked to get snaked. I’ve always wondered how y’all decide whose wave it is. What is the general etiquette?”

One reply (of the non-joking variety) included:

“Closest to the peak, usually the deeper and first up gets priority.”

But when it comes to HB, anything goes.
