Surf Legend Laird Hamilton Lost at Sea (Video)

Laird Hamilton is larger than life, within the surf world and without.

He pioneered tow surfing at Jaws in the nineties; he surfed a wave that is still considered a benchmark for slab surfing today at Teahupo’o in 2000; and he’s since transferred into the roles of fitness guru, apparel line creator, and superfood mega mogul.

But over the years of living on the edge, Laird expectedly has found himself in some dicey situations. Like, apparently, being lost at sea…

Hamilton recently appeared on The Shawn Ryan Show, where he talked about pretty much everything in his life, including a near-death experience, which was surprisingly not in the ocean, rather a river in Oregon, and how surfers can read waves.

But, like a lot of folks, host Shawn Ryan wanted to hear more about the good stuff, the near-death experiences.

Laird obliged:

“I’ve been lost at sea. I spent a day and a half out in the ocean. [It was] in Hawaii, like 60 miles offshore. That was a different kind of being near-death.

“It was a longer time to think about it, but no imminent threat right away. There wasn’t danger right away, but there was the possibility. Like, hey, I’m 60 miles out from shore. I won’t be able to get back. I hope something shows up to pick me up.

“I only had a good half a day to think about it, but it was good enough. If you really think it’s the end – like, am I gonna get eaten by a shark? Am I going to drown?

No explanation whatsoever as to how or why Laird ended up stranded at sea.

Laird’s gonna Laird.

Wiiiilllllllssssooon!
