Surf Lakes Announces Plans for New Wave Pool Based on Unique Design
Surf Lakes may have one of the most unique wave pool designs in existence right now. The facility generates waves using a massive, steampunk-looking plunger, smack dab in the middle of the pool. As a result, it creates an entire 360-degree field of waves.
However, their first facility, called Surf Lakes Yeppoon, was just a proof of concept and not available to the public (though Dylan Graves did manage to score an invite). With a new announcement from the company, we now may be closer to seeing a version of the unique contraption that you and I could actually visit.
As ABC Australia reports, Surf Lakes has confirmed plans for a resort centered around a new and improved version of its technology. The proposed project also includes a wellness center, coaching hub and skate ramp. The updated pool promises to produce waves up to eight and a half feet tall.
Surf Lakes told ABC that the site had been granted development approval and discussions were in place with partners to supply funding for the project. The company added that the proposal includes a renewable energy facility to minimize power costs. Surfing Queensland spokesperson Keanu Chapman says they hope the pool will be available ahead of the Brisbane Olympics in 2032, so it can be used as a place for prospective athletes to train.
“There’s an incredibly large global audience that would descend on this region just for this product,” said Mary Carroll, CEO of Capricorn Enterprise, an economic development organization responsible for the Capricorn region of Central Queensland. She added that the completed facility will be able to host 200 surfers at five skill levels. She added, “I’ve seen it in action many times and it’s quite mind blowing to watch.”
