New supported living scheme to open in Doncaster for care leavers

A new supported living scheme for young people who are leaving care is set to open later this month.

Askern Court in Doncaster will feature five self-contained flats and will offer support to help care leavers with the transition to independent living.

City of Doncaster Council said this would include teaching them valuable skills such as budgeting and finding employment.

The new accommodation is set to welcome its first residents later this month.

Askern Court is the council's third supported accommodation property and has been transformed from a disused block into "modern, bright and welcoming flats" with the help of care leavers.

The council said an on-site team would be on hand 24/7 to help residents with planning for their future, securing their own tenancy, finding and keeping employment.

Doncaster's mayor Ros Jones said: "Living alone for the first time is daunting for any of us, but particularly for our care leavers who do this at a young age and may not have the support of family members.

"We are pleased to be able to open this latest home that will provide our young people with a safe and supportive environment to develop their skills to live more independently and aid their transition into adulthood."
