We're in October now, so there's less than a month to go until Super Mario gets his latest adventure: Super Mario Odyssey. Because we're so close to release, Nintendo have put out an overview trailer, showing off a huge array of features and gameplay tidbits that you can expect when the game comes out next month.

If you've been paying close attention to all of the Super Mario Odyssey news, some of this won't be new to you, but some features, like Assist Mode and the new co-op features haven't really been shown off before. Regardless of if it's new or not, here's a rundown of everything shown off in that trailer.

Story

Bowser, internationally known bad guy, has stolen Princess Peach yet again, this time to marry her in a Princess Bride-esque act of throne stealing. He's damaged Mario's signature cap, so Cappy, a living, sentient hat, is taking its place to help Mario pilot the Odyssey, collect Power Moons, and save Princess Peach!

Cappy

With Cappy, Mario has brand new attack, new ways to get around by jumping on him, and a special ability: Capturing. By throwing Cappy at an enemy, Mario can capture it, assuming control of them, be it ally, enemy, or inanimate object. They could help him swim, get around faster, or get to otherwise unreachable locations.

Capturing is a key part to the game, and seems to be the main feature used in Super Mario Odyssey's puzzle solving. One boss shown needs you to capture its fists in order to damage it, for example.

Outfits

Mario's no longer stuck to his blue overalls, and you can purchase new outfits or caps for Mario. Want a nice sombrero for the desert, or a hard hat for a construction site? By spending regional coins, you can unlock brand new outfits for Mario to wear, although they don't seem to add any bonuses.

Snapshot Mode

This time, there's a take on the photo modes many games have, with Snapshot Mode. With this, the game pauses, and the camera can be move freely to get the best picture of Mario. Presumably, this has functionality with the Nintendo Switch's screen capture button, and will make it easy to share these photos online.

Co-op play

Somewhat similarly to how Super Mario Galaxy had co-op play, Super Mario Odyssey allows a second player to join and assume the role of Cappy. Player one will stay as Mario, while Player two can attack enemies, clear up messes, and generally make life easier for Mario.

Assist Mode

For players that find navigating the open world more difficult, Assist Mode plants arrows along the ground to direct Mario to his next objective, and also makes falling off platforms much less punishing. It's both a way to make the game feel more relaxed, and to help those who might not be too familiar with open world games.

Super Mario Odyssey Where to buy

amiibo support

The three amiibo releasing alongside Super Mario Odyssey are Wedding Mario, Wedding Peach, and Wedding Bowser. Tap Wedding Mario, and you'll get Mario's Wedding Outfit plus temporary invincibility, tap Wedding Peach to get her wedding outfit plus a Life-Up Heart, and tap Wedding Bowser to receive his outfit and reveal regional coin locations. The outfits can also be gained without amiibo as you play through the game.

The full list of compatible amiibo can be found online, where any other amiibo will indicate on the map where a Power Moon is when used.
