Even your family member who never picked up a controller in their life has heard of Mario and Luigi at least once before, and now Nintendo’s mega-franchise is upon us in an even bigger way as a major animated film via Illumination and Universal Pictures! If you just saw the movie and want to see the faces behind the characters, or just need a refresher before you check it out, here is the ensemble of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in real life.

Mario - Chris Pratt

Our favorite mushroom-munching plumber is voiced by Chris Pratt. Some diehard Mario fans protested that the original voice actor, Charles Martinet, wasn’t cast in the role, but Martinet isn’t going anywhere anytime soon as far as the games are concerned!

Pratt is a great actor fluent as the comic relief in shows like Parks and Recreation and film series like Guardians of the Galaxy and even more MCU projects. He has fronted an animated smash-hit before as Emmet in The Lego Movie.

Luigi - Charlie Day

Day is playing Mario’s ganglier, more cowardly brother Luigi. Luigi is a recurring Player 2 character in the main Mario series, but also has starred in a spinoff or two of his own like the Luigi’s Mansion series.

Princess Peach - Anya Taylor-Joy

Princess Peach, voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy for the movie, has been around since the very first time Mario appeared in the Donkey Kong arcade game. She unfortunately hasn’t gotten many solo games to really shine, besides being playable in the big spinoffs like Mario Kart and the thousand Mario sports games. In this interview, Miyamoto said that expanding her story in the movie was one of the “first conversations'' they had creatively.

Taylor-Joy has been a huge star since her debut in The Witch, and also captivated audiences as Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit. She has some voice acting cred as well, having had a main role in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Bowser - Jack Black

In the first teaser for this movie, the first major character we laid eyes on was Mario’s formidable archnemesis, Bowser, voiced by Jack Black. He was pretty mean to those cute penguins, so Bowser will likely be just as diabolical in the movie as in the games.

Jack Black IRL

Whether it’s his band Tenacious D, an early hit like School of Rock or High Fidelity, or his prior voice work like Kung-Fu Panda, Jack Black has an impressively huge resume, and he sounds right at home playing the Mario villain.

Toad - Keegan Michael-Key

Toad has been a supporting character in the Mario games since the original NES games, with the Toads being Mario’s primary allies in the Mushroom Kingdom and the subjects of Princess Peach.

Key is well known for some hilarious sketch comedy work with Jordan Peele on the Comedy Central show Key & Peele. He has since kept busy with roles in films like Don’t Think Twice and The Bubble. He’s also a very experienced voice actor with parts in great animated films like Toy Story 4 and 2022’s Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.

Donkey Kong - Seth Rogen

Donkey Kong is technically Mario’s original rival, so he had to make an appearance on the silver screen. The huge ape in the classy red tie is being voiced by Seth Rogen for this film, and it’ll be exciting to see since Donkey Kong isn’t exactly verbose in most of the games he appears in.

Rogen will forever be associated with stoner comedies with his films like Knocked Up and Pineapple Express. However, he has also taken on more dramatic roles recently like playing Steve Wozniak in 2015’s Steve Jobs and more recently having a major supporting role in Steven Spielberg’s film The Fabelmans.
