'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Becomes First Film in 2023 To Cross the $1 Billion USD Milestone

Nintendo and Universal's The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially crossed the $1 billion USD mark, becoming the first film of 2023 to do so.

The global box office milestone occurred just 26 days after the film's initial release. The animated video game adaptation grossed a total of $490 million USD in North America, while also grossing $532 million USD internationally. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also only the fifth film during the pandemic era to join the coveted $1 billion USD club, following in the footsteps of films such as, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion and Avatar: The Way of Water.

In just the first five days of its opening, The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit $204 million USD at the box office, making it the biggest opening weekend of the year and the second-biggest debut ever for an animated film. Since its release, it is now the highest-grossing movie of 2023 and the highest-ever growing for a video game-based movie. The results have been a much greater success than the 1993 disastrous live-action film. This film saw Chris Pratt voice Mario alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black and Seth Rogen.

In other entertainment news, Vampire Survivors is set to become an animated TV series.
