Sunday Brunch: Mirella’s Tavern in West Town turns one woman’s dream into a reality

Mirella’s Tavern in West Town carries a legacy of hard work and family.

Executive Chef Jose Rivera explains the restaurant is named in honor of a woman who worked for him as a dishwasher for a long time. She always wanted to start her own restaurant, Rivera says, but tragically died in a car accident before that could happen.

So Rivera has teamed up with her kids to make Mirella’s dream a reality, opening the restaurant named after her in February.

“The kids approached me and said, ‘Chef, can you help us to open a restaurant?’ So I said, ‘Why not?'” Rivera says. “I knew this lady for a long time. I’ve seen the kids grow up, so they know me very well, like a family.

“So we decided to team up.”

And they make everything from scratch, including the brunch menu.

“We have a very good selection,” Rivera says. “I think we have a little bit of everything.”

Rivera joined Sean Lewis on the WGN Weekend Morning News Sunday Brunch to make Mirella’s avocado toast, which comes with two eggs any style and cheesy potatoes. Watch the attached video to see the fresh spin Rivera puts on Mirella’s avocado toast.
