Skin-conscious girlies spend the summer applying then reapplying sunscreen, hanging underneath an umbrella and hiding out under a sun hat (psst ... check our recs for cute caps here!). While a real-life sunburn is not only painful, majorly damaging to the skin, and can potentially cause more serious issues like skin cancer, TikTokers have made a fake version of sunburn, created using blush, a seasonal makeup trend — and tbh it's so pretty.

"You know that feeling when your cheeks get a tiny bit sunburnt after an amazing vacation or an amazing day at the beach with your friends? Obviously, we don’t want to get skin damage, but the look of [sunburn] has always made people feel good about themselves. They like the look of a bit of color on their cheeks," makeup artist Shadi Malek tells Seventeen.

While the trend can't be traced back to a specific moment (unlike the surge of interest in wearing face gems after the HBO series Euphoria premiered), many credit the lovely Hailey Bieber for pioneering the sunburnt blush look in her 2019 Pop magazine photoshoot. The pics went viral, landing the supermodel's face on many beauty babes' Pinterest boards. Since then, a whole slew of celebs, including Kylie Jenner, Addison Rae, and Bella Hadid, have caught on. And once the stars do it, everyone wants to know how to get the look.

Before you break out the blush or get clicker-finger happy buying a new stash of makeup, there are a few things you should know. To nail down the technique, you first need to make sure that your blush shade, formula, and placement of the color are all correct.

First comes the hard part: choosing which color you want out of a sea of options. Luckily for us, Shadi narrows the field a bit. "The best way to get this look is by using a [highly] pigmented blush because you’re trying to recreate the look of a bit of sunburn," says Shadi. She recommends choosing a shade that has an orange, pink, or red tone as it will mimic the hue skin naturally turns when kissed by the sun.

As for the formula, Shadi personally uses cream blushes to get the sunburnt look as she says "It makes it look more natural."

Makeup artist Tobi Henney, who has painted the faces of Megan Fox and Kiernan Shipka, also loves cream blush formulas as well. She has a great tip for making the flushed look last even longer. "I love a combo of cream and powder [blush] for the layering effect," Tobi says. Dusting a similar colored powder blush on top of the cream blush you already applied acts in the same way a setting powder does for the foundation, locking in the product you've already applied. "And [it] will make the color also pop more!" Tobi adds.

Next, Henney says that the placement of the blush should be applied "quite high on the cheek" and "across the apples of the cheeks" before dusting a bit of blush on the tip of your nose as well. Some celebs like Kylie Jenner have even taken the blush placement further, adding a splash of color onto their temples.
