Animal decor has been a long-standing theme in nurseries. Whether it’s a kid’s room adorned with woodland creatures or a renovated loft that inspires safari adventures, whimsical critter decor and nurseries go together. So, when Emily Raciti was decorating her daughter Mila’s nursery in their organic modern California townhouse, she sought inspiration from a specific and loveable animal: llamas.

“I somehow got the idea to do a llama-themed nursery, and (very creatively) wanted to do pink tones since we were having a girl,” Raciti writes via email. “So I started there with lots of llama decor and pink accents and filled in the room with other pieces that I found and thought would mesh well!”

Even though soft pink shades are sprinkled throughout the room — like in the wallpaper and throw blanket — they’re offset by calming neutrals and plush textures — for example, the plus shag Safavieh rug purchased from Amazon and the white Living Spaces recliner. The two large windows let in abundant natural light, too (which is one of Raciti’s favorite elements except for when Maya’s napping).

But Raciti’s ultimate purchase for Maya’s nursery is the giant stuffed llama from Pottery Barn. She loved the decorative animal so much that she was set to buy it at full price. However, as design luck would have it, it appeared on her Facebook Marketplace, and Raciti snagged it immediately.

The llama figurine isn’t alone in the room — llama portraits are above the changing table, and miniature llama figurines dangle above Maya’s crib. The whimsical designs and soft colors make for a super relaxing space, which Raciti appreciates.

“I like to think that it helps us both unwind at the end of the day and get ready to sleep,” she explained. “We don’t do much playing in the nursery, so I wanted the space to really be associated with sleep for our daughter as much as possible.”

Maya’s nursery isn’t the only calming space in the home. (There’s a cozy, DIY bookcase in the living room.) If you want to see more of their gorgeous space, visit the full home tour on Apartment Therapy.
