Summer Walker Says She’s Done With the Music Industry

"Y'all can have the music and I'ma just head out."

Breakout artist Summer Walker seems to be thinking about leaving the music scene as quickly as she burst on to it with her 2018 mixtape Last Day of Summer.

The 23-year-old Atlanta native's star has been on the rise since then, and she followed up her 2018 release with 2019 debut album Over It, which catapulted her popularity even further. But if one of Summer's most recent Instagram posts is serious, the singer-songwriter might be considering going out on a high note.

On Nov. 3, Summer took to her Instagram to share one of a handful of new posts. However, unlike Summer's other Insta pics, the one she shared of Marceline the Vampire Queen from popular series Adventure Time was accompanied by a lengthy, intense caption. As her note explains, Summer is seriously considering leaving the music industry for good once she finishes her current Over It tour. Per Summer's website, the tour is currently set to wrap on December 22 in Atlanta.

According to the caption, Summer seems deeply over feeling used by others. She begins, writing, " [Nah, for real] though I’ve decided y’all don’t deserve me lol I knew from day one I was to real for this sh*t. Y’all can have the music & ima just head out. F*ck the interviews, photo shoots, videos, & really the shows too. I’ll finish this tour out tho. I’m just a regular person, nothing more. Lol people got this fame shit f*cked up. I been me from day one, I’m not bout to start acting different, talking different, treating people different, or looking different. people really expect too much from you."

Althought Summer isn't naming names, it's not hard to empathize with her feelings here, especially considering Summer has only gotten more and more popular with the release of melodic R&B hits like "Playing Games" or "Girls Need Love" and she's maintained an active, connected presence with fans on social media. It seems like it could be hard to feel authentic or true to yourself and your goals when the world is suddenly watching and expecting so much of you.

Summer also seems to touch on this in her caption, too. She writes, "Everyday / everything isn’t a miss America bad b*tch contest, & I don’t feel the need to put others down to stay relevant. people really just DISCONNECTED.... hiding behind these apps, these filters, the clothes, the makeup, the hair lol a lot of y’all need to step back & get into yourselves.. from a different perspective."

The post could be a prediction of her future career moves, or it might be a way to process some hard feelings — she could potentially even channel these relatable emotions into her work. Either way, she brings up some important points about fame and how Instagram culture affects all of us.

As Summer Walker writes at the end of her post, "Take the same amount of time that you normally do to prepare/improve your physical but apply it to your spirit & become COMFORTABLE with the real you, whoever that may be as long as your not hurting anyone. That same amount of time you take to chase the 'bag' try putting that same amount of energy into patience, acceptance, understanding, self awareness, self love."
