Summer Swell Pattern is Brewing, Says Surf Forecaster

It looks like we’re officially moving into Summer. According to Mark Sponsler, of the surf forecasting site Stormsurf, the southern hemisphere is beginning to stir after its winter slumber.

“The southern hemi is waking up, but the north hasn’t completely given up the ghost,” said Sponsler in the latest video on his YouTube channel. “Little bit of northwest windswell for Hawai’i expected,” he added, “We have some in the water for California, nothing really epic.”

However, of more interest was a series of gales brewing in the southern hemisphere. The first passed under New Zealand and another formed in the south-central Pacific in the middle of last week. The second was the more significant, with 34-foot seas, due north, unshadowed and targeting California with side-band energy into Hawai’i. Sponsler’s prediction is that the second system will lead to a solid run of a couple of days of swell. Moreover, more activity around New Zealand, across the south-central Pacific, should add even more swell behind that.

“It definitely looks like a summer swell pattern is setting up,” summed up Sponsler. “The North Pacific hasn’t quite shut down, so a little bit of yin and yang going on here. But the good news is there’s going to be surf.”

As to the longterm, Sponsler says it looks like we’re heading towards La Niña, but it’s still a little too early to make hard predictions.
