Summer of senior fun

May 23—The Ashtabula County senior centers are coming together to host their annual Senior Prom.

This year's theme is "A Starry Night."

Ashtabula County Council on Aging Director Lisa Bruckman said that the seniors like that it's a night out.

"Everybody gets dressed up," Bruckman said. "There's a nice food layout and great entertainment. This year we will have Thunder Creek Band coming. It's a really fun event."

Bruckman hosted her first Senior Prom for the ACCOA in June 2014. It was at the Kathryn Rose Party Center on North Bend Road and she called it "Fire and Ice."

Each year the ACCOA has a king and queen coronation. Normally they had participants vote, but this year they will be picking the king and queen through a random drawing.

The Geneva ACCOA Center for Active Living and Jefferson Senior Center will be hosting the event together.

"This is a wonderful night for all of the seniors to get together and have dinner, visit, listen and dance to music and have a chance to win raffle baskets," said Geneva Senior Center Director Carolyn Holden.

"We are hoping to make it a special, memorable event for all," said Village of Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Jamie Dean. "We try to have different events where seniors can get out and socialize at minimal cost. We know a lot of our seniors love to dress up, dance and have an evening out with their significant others or friends."

The prom will be hosted at the Jefferson Community Center at 11 East Jefferson St. on June 27 and will start at 5 p.m. and end at 9 p.m.

The Ashtabula ACCOA Center for Active Living hosts a number of unique activities each summer for seniors to enjoy.

Bruckman said she is hoping to see more men get involved this summer.

She came up with the idea for the "Bellies, Brats, and Beer" event for Father's Day that the Ashtabula ACCOA will host on Friday, June 14.

Aminah Louise, a performer and instructor from Cleveland, will be performing a fusion belly dance show.

After the show, bratwurst sandwiches and root beer floats will be provided.

The center is located at 4148 Main Avenue.

Seniors can look forward to this summer being the best by par.

Ashtabula ACCOA will be traveling to Andover Golf Course on May 16, Village Green Golf Course on June 20, Maple Ridge Golf Course on July 18 and Hemlock Springs Gold Course on Aug. 15.

This includes nine holes at each course. Lunch and beverages will be provided.

The ACCOA's summer picnic is July 31 at Saybrook Township Park.

Bruckman wanted to highlight ACCOA's motto which is, "we're not aging, we're actively living." With all of these summer events planned, seniors can embrace that mantra.
