Summer Lovin' might have happened so fast, but its legacy appears to be endless. Paramount are now developing a prequel to Grease, based on the concept of the 1978 musical’s most iconic number.

Towards the beginning of the original film, John Travolta’s Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy Olsson sing a nostalgic duet, recounting their summer fling.

The Grease prequel is being written by Aladdin screenwriter John August, and will reportedly delve into the story of this mysterious rendezvous, which Zuko and Olsson recollected differently in the jaunty song, Summer Nights.

While Sandy painted a wholesome picture in her lines, Danny’s version of events was more sexually suggestive.

The film’s sequel, Grease 2, starred Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer. The 1982 movie grossed over $15 million, but was generally panned by critics.

In 2016, the Grease “live for TV” production, starring Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens, was more successful: it won five Emmy awards and received strong ratings.

It is not currently known whether the Grease prequel will be a musical.

Have you got chills for a Grease prequel? Or is Summer Loving the worst idea to come out of Rydell High School?
