Summer is the perfect time to experiment with a new beauty look and colorful liner is at the top of our must try list — especially after seeing Lupita Nyong’o pull off the trend in Paris recently. Who better to ask about how to make brightly-hued liner work than Nyong’o’s go-to makeup artist, Nick Barose. “Liner is the easiest way to wear a fun color,” he says. “Keep it just on the upper lash line and don’t make the tails too long.”

This trend isn’t about looking natural, instead Barose says to focus on playing with a color that you love. “It’s more of a modern approach. Colors like blue, green or purple are so easy to wear right now,” he says. “On light skin, maybe opt for something less vivid and more pastel, like mint green or pale blue. For medium skin, try a golden green or bold blue and for dark skin, try violet, emerald or cobalt.” The key to nailing the look though, is balance. Keep the rest of your makeup subtle, not too colorful.

“You can add a strong lip if you feel comfortable, but the key is to try not to use a color that is too opposite of your eye color,” says Barose. Avoid pairing a green liner with a red lip because you might end up looking like a parrot. Instead, try a green with an orange or fuchsia lip color. If you are wearing blue liner, try a burgundy lip (Barose likes Armani Rouge Ecstasy in Code, $35).

If you want to make a colorful liner work for day, Barose says to look for a long-wearing pencil because they are easier to manipulate, meaning you can smudge and diffuse it along the lashline. He recommends Estée Lauder DoubleWear Pencil ($32), which has a slight shimmer. Once the sun goes down, make a statement with a liquid liner for strong, bold color. Try Nars Eyeliner Stylo in Atlantic ($27) or Make Up For Ever Color Liner in Iridescent Plum ($20).
