How to Make an Embroidery Hoop Wreath

Supplies Needed

  • Embroidery hoops in two sizes

Step-by-Step Directions

Follow these simple how-to instructions to assemble your embroidery hoop Christmas wreath. You should be able to complete the project in under an hour.

Step 1: Add Your Message

Using a computer and printer print out the word "merry" on a piece of paper—or hand write if you're comfortable—sizing the type to fit the space inside the smallest hoop. Cut into a strip to create a banner and thread the paper between the two rings of the small hoop. Use scissors to trim the edges of the paper strip as shown above.

Editor's Tip: If you're going to hang your wreath outside where it may be exposed to rain or snow, consider using a laminator to protect the paper message. You can find cold laminate sheets at most crafts stores or visit a local copy shop that offers laminating services.

Step 2: Prepare the Wreath Base

Arrange the embroidery hoops so the smaller one is centered inside the larger one with even space on all sides. Press the foam block into the hoops to mark their positions and give you a guide for cutting. Use a knife to cut away the foam where the hoops will go. Use an adhesive made for foam to attach the foam block to the hoops; let dry. You may also want to use a few floral pins to secure the hoops to the foam to really lock in place.

Step 3: Add Succulents & Ornaments

If you're using real succulents, use floral pins to attach the plants to the floral foam. If you're using faux succulents with long pick bases, you should be able to simply insert them into the foam without the the need for pins. Cut artificial berry picks into smaller portions using the wire cutters and place throughout the arrangement. Pin or glue small wicker balls in place as accents.

Step 4: Add a Ribbon for Hanging

Determine where on your door you want the wreath to sit and measure the distance between the top of the wreath to your hanger. Double the measurement and add 4 inches. Cut a length of ribbon and knot the ends to create a loop. Secure the ribbon loop to the hoop and hang your finished wreath.

Editor's Tip: If you don't want to damage your door with a nail, make your ribbon loop long enough that you can secure in place on the top edge of the door with a flat tack. The ends of the ribbon will be hidden when the door is closed and you won't cause any visible damage!
