Stylists Share 6 Low-Maintenance Haircuts For Women Over 50 Experiencing Thinning Hair

There are numerous factors that contribute to hair loss, including consuming a diet high in carbs and refined sugars, excessive use of silicones, and heat styling. However, one factor that is often overlooked is getting the wrong haircut, which can make thin hair appear even thinner as we age.

While it’s important to have good washing and styling habits, achieving volume starts with getting the right cut. We consulted with experts, stylists, and professionals to uncover six flattering (and celeb-fave) haircut options that you can request at your next salon appointment.

Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from Ghanima Abdullah, hair expert and cosmetologist at The Right Hairstyles, Gina Rivera, celebrity hair stylist and Founder of Phenix Salon Suites, Jean Will, hair expert and co-founder of NiaWigs Inc., Dr. Roshan Vara, hair transplant surgeon and co-founder at The Treatment Rooms, and Lauren Udoh, professional hair stylist and hair creative director at Wig Reports.

5 Chic, Flattering Spring Hairstyles For Women Over 50, According To Stylists

1. Wavy Bob with Sideswept Bangs

Rather than blunt fringe or baby bangs, Rivera recommends side bangs, as seen here on Glenn Close. These, she says, "detract from the appearance of fine or limp hair and can add dimension to a style." In addition, side bangs can also "be styled in a variety of ways which can lead to the hair appearing fuller."

Pairing a bob with this is a "great cut for thin fine hair and this can be styled in so many ways which brings versatility to a cut," Rivera notes. Ultimately, she says, side bangs are "huge right now and a great way to add more to a short style."

2. Layered Pixie with a Deep Side Part

Side parts evoke not only Old Hollywood, timeless glam— they also provide instant volume to short hair. As Abdullah points out, "in this manner, you can move the hair from one side to the other, as you wish."

The added hair going over, she says, as seen here on Halle Berry's more modern, fresh take, will increase volume in the area as well, especially if your hair is used to being parted down the center.

"If you really prefer a center part, make a short one instead so that the hair in front goes to either side of your face," she suggests. "Then the hair in the center can be brushed back. Any difference that you create when your hair is used to lying flat and completely to the sides will create volume and make a big difference," she says.

3. Sleek Asymmetrical Lob

A textured asymmetrical lob or bob is a "terrific choice" for mature beauties," Rivera explains, since it's a perfect blend of classic yet still modern and trendy. "This style is so hip that it’s perfect for making our ladies in their prime look super chic," she says. "Removing a bit of length from the hair, [adds] movement and creates a youthful appeal."

When it comes to styling, Rivera notes that "texturing the hair" creates an "opportunity to remove some of the damaged ends and weight which bring more life to the hair as well." Additionally, Rivera advises that it’s best to always "consult with your stylist on a maintenance schedule but for those trying to regain hair health, make sure to trim every 4-6 weeks."

The thing about a bob is, Abdullah says, "if it's blunt, it will sort of make the ends bunch up when curled lightly and give them more body." A deep side part (as seen here on Rose Byrne) is added "to create more volume on the top of the head by literally pushing more hair to one side of your head," and this hairstyle is great for hiding thinning on top if you have any.

4. Wispy Lob with Curtain Bangs

Will suggests adding wispy, parted fringe to a classic layered, face-framing lob for not only a more youthful look overall but also to hide any thinning or hair loss at the crown.

"This hairstyle is perfect for women over 40," she explains. "It will help hide their forehead [and any signs of wrinkling or natural aging] to look younger. It is suitable for women who have thick hair, as well as thin." Will points out that this style can emphasize your eyes and cheekbones.

Abdullah agrees, adding that this cut, as seen on Kerry Washington, requires longer fringe worn down or parted down the center. This "flatters just about any face at any age," she notes. Curtain bangs, she explains, "neatly frame the face while drawing attention away from serious aging signs."

This "type of fringe cut creates a soft, natural-looking wave at the top of the head," Abdullah adds and says they are often used to frame the face and "specifically, to give it a youthful appearance." The style is "easy to achieve," Abdullah continues, and "looks great on many different hair types."

Abdullah also points out that curtain bangs will always be in style because they can "make your face appear smaller and slimmer when they come down to cheek level." When it comes to thinning or finer hair specifically, she says that curtain bangs add volume to flat, thinning hair. "The style works well for women who want to hide thinning hair in the front," she adds. Noted!

5. Face-Framing Long Layers

If you're feeling like keeping more length but still want a change for the new season, Rivera says that adding face-framing layers can easily create more volume, movement and a youthful look overall.

"Layering allows for the removal of damaged ends and also creates a lot of opportunities for styling," Rivera explains, which she deems "perfect for those that are young at heart." Like here on Jennifer Aniston, Rivera says "it’s easy to add some longer layers to create volume," and that layers are part of many amazing cuts that are "well recognized for being versatile."

Additionally, when it comes to freshly-cut and layered locks and to keep your hair and overall appearance looking healthy, she concludes that it’s also "super important to use a great wet line packed with biotin, collage, and B Vitamins."

6. Layered Voluminous Pixie

Jamie Lee Curtis is the eternal queen of chic, short gray hairstyles and frequently sports a layered 'do like this that flatters her features effortlessly.

"A pixie cut is always fun and can be styled in such a way that is youthful but also mature," Vara says. As seen here, Curtis' pixie is kept short but also wispy, giving plenty of volume without length that would weigh it down.

"The rest of your hair should be piece-y and angled," Abdullah adds. She notes that "the pixie cut should swirl around your head to hide hair loss." Abdullah stresses that a pixie cut with layers still maintains volume that is both gorgeous and easy to manage for spring.
