Stylish Guys Just Can’t Quit Monochromatic Outfits

Are bold-as-hell monochromatic outfits starting to become a little...monotonous? This week at CinemaCon in Las Vegas stylish guys like Ansel Elgort, Chadwick Boseman, and Henry Golding went all in on one-color looks. Henry Golding actually did it twice, in fact. Last weekend we saw it on Michael B. Jordan at the NAACP Image Awards. Seth Rogen did it at SXSW. Charlie Plummer at the Tom Ford show. And that’s just the last few weeks! Pay attention to what famous men wear and trust us, you’re going to see a lot of the same—color. Suits, separates, athleisure. No stylist or stylish man is above this sneaky but extremely effective trick. So why should you be?

You wear one red thing, you’re using a “pop of color” to “make a statement”. Mom will love it. Tan France will love it. You wear all red things, you just arrived from the year 2032. Instead of just confident, this move is confrontational. It’s aggressive, but in the most elegant way, which, if you listen to Corporate Lunch, you’ll know is extremely A Thing in menswear right now. And this is maybe why head-to-toe bold color has been so enthusiastically embraced. It’s a look that is timely on its face and timeless at its core—pick up any old issue of GQ and there’s a monochromatic style endorsement somewhere—which makes it a lot easier to pull off than, say, a tactical vest or chunky sneakers. Timeless, those trends are not.

We’re going to assume that in 2019, thanks to Instagram and Kanye West and everything the #menswear era taught you about getting dressed, that you’re no stranger to wearing monochromatic or one-color looks. Maybe you’re the arty white jeans/white tee guy, or perhaps you enjoy the yuppie energy of some head-to-toe navy blue. That’s great! Enjoy those outfits. They’re probably awesome. But maybe also consider kicking things up a notch this spring with a slightly more adventurous color. Yellow is underappreciated. Royal purple is a vibe. Can we interest you in some cerulean? The move is getting a little famous but we’re still here for it. Like, what’s one more one-color look?
