The style stars to watch on the Golden Globes virtual red carpet, from Emma Corrin to Jane Fonda

It may feel as though the pandemic has been dragging on for about a century, but we are yet to see America's two biggest film award ceremonies take place in this new socially distant world. The Golden Globe nominations marked the start of a season like no other, where the red carpet will be replaced with the celebrity sitting-room carpet and outfits will likely run the full gamut from traditional black tie to slippers and dressing gowns.

The nominees this year are particularly fashion-conscious, with many renowned for bypassing the immaculate Hollywood look for something more real. Brits dominated across the board but particularly when it came to best actress nominations, and it is a shame that we won't see English newcomers like Emma Corrin and Daisy Edgar-Jones in their full evening gown glory for the first time. Equally this is a chance to find out how Hollywood red-carpet stalwarts such as Cate Blanchett and Jane Fonda dress up when they're just at home on the sofa.

Emma Corrin

The Crown: Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama

Emma Corrin is ‘fashion’s next muse,’ said British Vogue editor Edward Enninful in his letter introducing the magazine’s October issue. The actress who played Diana, Princess of Wales, so beautifully in the fourth season of The Crown has rapidly risen to become the darling of the fashion industry, wearing (among others) a cobalt dipped hem ballgown by Oscar de la Renta on the cover of Vogue and Miu Miu for the Netflix premiere. Many of Corrin's fashion choices are notably similar to those of her most famous character to date – may I suggest a reimagining of the revenge dress for the Golden Globes ceremony? Not, admittedly, that she needs one.

Jodie Comer

Killing Eve: Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama

Jodie Comer's most famous outfits still come from playing the couture-loving murderer who made her name (who could forget her running through Paris in hot pink Molly Goddard in season one of Killing Eve?). Although Comer's own style is becoming equally memorable. For a recent interview, the star said Villanelle had inspired her to be bolder with her fashion choices – I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a recreation of the pink silk Rosie Assoulin top and magenta William Vintage skirt from the infamous Amsterdam 'Instagram' scene.

Lily Collins

Emily in Paris: Best Performance by Actress in a comedy series

Away from all the sugar and colour and micro miniskirts of Emily In Paris’s wardrobe, the real Lily Collins likes clothes that are a little more daring - thank goodness. For an appearance at the MTV Movie Awards in December, she wore a wet-look latex dress by Saint Laurent, while suede thigh-high boots, leather Dior coats and lattice knit minidresses have all featured in her Instagram repertoire. Bring on an edgier Emily in LA later this month.

Emma: Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy

Regularly seen on the front row of shows including Chanel and Gucci prior to the pandemic, the star of The Queen's Gambit – a show which our fashion team decided was one of the most stylish of 2020 – is guaranteed to wear a memorable outfit for her first Golden Globes as a nominee, and a double one at that. If Emma is anything to go by, it will be something ultra pretty in ice-cream colours – just the thing to cheer us up.

Daisy Edgar-Jones

Normal People: Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series

With a Jimmy Choo collaboration and a slew of much-copied pandemic outfits (does anyone wear the sweater vest better than her?) under her belt, Daisy Edgar-Jones is rapidly en-route to becoming one of Britain's biggest style stars. “I don’t want to dress like everyone else,” she said in an interview with Vogue – and this desire to experiment has been crucial during a year of Zoom television appearances for which Edgar-Jones has had to style herself. Good practice for an awards season in lockdown, I say.

Cate Blanchett

Mrs America: Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series

This navy sequinned white-ruffle- trimmed floor-length gown from Esteban Cortázar was first seen on Cate Blanchett in 2015 at the London premier of Carol. The second time she wore it was at last September's Venice Film Festival – a move that is still rare in the red-carpet world. Understandably, Blanchett says she finds the amount of perfectly serviceable clothes that end up in landfill “wilful and destructive” and is determined to re-wear more of her wardrobe – well done her, and let's see what she dusts off later this month.

Pieces of a Woman: Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

Playing Princess Margaret in The Crown was the role that made Vanessa Kirby famous – and, really, what better muse could a woman ask for than the Queen's exceptionally glamorous sister? A fan of brands like Galvan London and Elie Saab, Kirby often wears luxurious textures with colourful lipstick and ultra-high heels. What will she pick for an awards ceremony at home? Well, the question we should probably ask is 'What would Margaret wear?'.

French Exit: Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy

"I adore a woman in a great suit. In my closet, I have suits from Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen, and a new white Armani that I love," the actress said in an interview with Harper's Bazaar. I agree wholeheartedly and for an awards ceremony at home, a well-cut tux is likely to be far more comfortable than any evening gown. The question is: which style will she choose?

Jane Fonda

Lifetime Achievement Award

And finally: Jane Fonda. Actress, activist and aerobics instructor extraordinaire, Fonda is the perfect choice for a lifetime achievement award. The 83-year old has got red-carpet style down to a fine art – all figure flattering gowns in bright colours, floor-grazing coats and mid-height heels. Although is it wrong if a small part of me hopes to get a glimpse of Fonda in her leotard and colourful print leggings from the Eighties? Because really, what could be more 2021 than that?
