Style rules for Second Saturday

Creative pursuits for all ages will pop up across downtown Bakersfield this Second Saturday.

During the celebration organized by The Hub of Bakersfield, the community can also shop for Mother's Day gifts or treat Mom to a fun outing.

Bring the family to enjoy Revive the Runway Jr. at Three Door Studios (2024 20th St.).

Following the Revive the Runway competition taking place Friday at Junk-Atique Outlet Thrift Store, this event will feature junior designers from age 8 to 13 who were challenged to create an article of clothing or entire outfit featuring materials that were thrifted, donated or secondhand.

The event will also include creative stations for guests of all ages featuring the talents of Three Door's residents The Playful Space and The Studio, which organized the event with Junk-Atique.

Revive the Runway Jr. will run from 2 to 4 p.m.

Jazz in the Garden returns this month to the Bakersfield Museum of Art (1930 R St.).

The summer concert series in partnership with The Hub will feature trumpeter Kris Tiner and the Bakersfield College Jazz Studies Ensemble.

Bring a low-seated chair or blanket and snacks to enjoy live music under the trees.

Nena's Kitchen and Sabor Taino Smokehouse food trucks will be on site.

Guests will also be able to create their own collage inspired by the intuitive work of Rochelle Botello featured in her exhibition "Free Fall." The all-ages art project will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is free for members and "pay as you wish" for other guests since the museum is in between exhibition cycles. (The summer exhibitions open on May 30.)

RAM (614 Kentucky St.) will host an artist talk with Vikki Cruz and Laura Krifka.

The two artists are among those featured in "Girl on Girl," the current exhibition at the Old Town Kern gallery.

This exhibition features paintings, drawings, and ceramics by an intergenerational group of female-identifying artists that uses the body as "a focal point for exploring identity, self-image, gender and desire."

Other artists in the show include Linda Christensen, Marjorie Dow, Frida Herrera, Rebekkah MacKay and Loriann Stevenson.

Krifka lives and works in San Luis Obispo while Bakersfield native Cruz splits her time between here and Los Angeles, where she coordinates the exhibition programs at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for the talk. Light refreshments will be served.

Along with vintage and home store Oleander + Palm (1022 Truxtun Ave.) and sustainable style business Number 46 (1032 Truxtun Ave.), shop for Mother's Day gifts with the Makers Market at the Cottages.

Visitors will also be able to pick up furnishings from Dagmar Alexandersson's DAX-Studio, Mother's Day floral bouquets by Reagan Lauren Design (preorder by Thursday via DM @reaganllaurendesign on Instagram) and artwork and creative pieces from Marjorie Dow, Alessandra Posada and Cristian Alixzander.

The market will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cottages at Truxtun Avenue and N Street.

In Your Wildest Dreams Consignment & Antiques (2819 F St.) will host its Spring Flea Market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 30 vendors and 80-plus inside the store will have antiques, vintage clothing, collectibles, vinyl, toys, furniture, home and garden items and more.

The F Street Farmers Market (2819 F St.) will also be in the lot from 8 a.m. to noon.

Materials will be provided but students are welcome to bring their own supplies.

On display at the center is the group show "Horsing Around" by BAA members.

Earlier in the day, Duane Anderson will hold a demonstration in watercolor at 11 a.m. and provide information on his May 18 workshop.

BAA members will also vote for the 2024-2025 board.

Moderngigi Gallery (900 18th St.) will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with work from gallery owner and artist Johnny Ramos including giclee prints and postcards.
