When you're starting a new fitness or diet regime, the hardest part can be giving up what you love most. But according to a new study, you can still indulge in sweet strawberry or super chocolately milkshake while also losing weight.

Mic reports that a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that milkshakes can keep people satiated between breakfast and lunch. (Sadly, we're not talking about the monster "freakshakes" that went viral in Australia and then later New York City.) After tracking 15 men who drank shakes that were 50 percent carbs, 20 percent protein, and 30 percent fat and ranged between 100 and 500 calories, researchers found that the shakes with the thickest texture but lowest calorie count kept participants fuller for longer.

"The increase in perceived fullness that is due solely to the increased viscosity, which is a phenomenon that we refer to as phantom fullness, may be useful in lowering energy intake," the research authors wrote.

So how exactly can you thicken up your smoothie or milkshake? Researchers used a food additive, locust bean gum, but they also suggest using guar gum or xatham gum. If you're not into that, you can also freeze banana or avocado slices, add oats, or choose Greek yogurt-all of which will add viscosity and nutrients to your glass.
