Study: Most popular book and ‘summer read’ in Ohio

(WCMH) — A new study looking at America’s favorite books with a state-by-state breakdown has pinpointed the most popular book in Ohio, the state’s favorite summer read and other fascinating habits of buckeye bookworms.

The research, conducted by the online learning site Preply, included analyzing the search volume across the country of Penguin’s 100 must-read classics and Amazon’s best-selling Kindle books as well as surveying more than 1,000 readers for more insights, the company stated in a news release.

Nationally, some books stood out in terms of popularity. Over the past year, “The Hunger Games,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” and “The Outsiders” were the most searched-for books across the United States. The titles, which range from dystopian thrillers to literary fiction, showcase a diverse interest in contemporary and classic narratives among American readers.

In Ohio, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was revealed as the most popular book. The timeless classic by Roald Dahl captured the imaginations of Ohioans, highlighting a fondness for whimsical and imaginative stories that transcend generations.

Another classic, Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” emerged as the Buckeye state’s favorite summer read, reflecting a preference for thought-provoking literature over June, July and August. Other states helped “Crave,” “The Godfather,” “Beloved,” and “Demon Copperhead” reach the top of the favorite summer read list for the nation.

U.S. readers chose “classic” books as their favorite genre followed by historical fiction and dystopian novels. Ohioans selected the “thriller” as their most popular category.

While works with the most pages were searched for in Montana, Nebraska, and South Carolina, people in Ohio looked for titles with around 362 pages. This put the state’s readers somewhere in the middle of the scale which ranged from 215 pages to 680 pages.
