New York Fashion Week was treated to a runway show unlike any other on Sept. 10. Studio 189 debuted its Spring/Summer 2024 collection at Manhattan’s Spring Studios and transformed what is typically just models strutting down a catwalk into a full-on performance. A poetry reading and several unforgettable dance numbers bookended the vibrant runway show.

Studio 189, co-founded by actress Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah, is celebrating 10 years of style this year; its latest collection is aptly titled “Evolution: A Decade of Style & Sustainability.”

The new offering of apparel and accessories brought elements from past collections and effortlessly combined them with fresh designs. The artisan brand is made in Africa and creates African and African-inspired pieces, so the fashion week crowd saw gorgeous patterns and designs in vivid shades of orange, blue, red, yellow and green. According to the show notes, the S/S ’24 collection also showcased plenty of rich fabrics “crafted with the hand-batik, artisanal weaving, ancient indigo dyeing techniques that have come to signify the Studio.” The pieces were bold yet wearable.

From zebra-striped shirts to skin-baring sets and flowing dresses, each model quite literally danced down the runway with a smile on their face — the joy on and off the runway was palpable.

Models of all ages and ethnicities took to the runway, which Studio 189’s very own artisans inspired. The backdrop was a collage of portraits of past and present artisans who helped shape the brand.

The models’ makeup was kept light and glowy, really allowing the clothes to shine, and several models sported flowing braids accented with traditional tribal beads from Nigeria and Ghana.
